‼️Hotfix for testnet and mainnet deployed‼️ Dear all, Yesterday at 11:04 CET, a Testnet anomaly was detected. The bug was introduced in version 0.9 of aleph-node. An erroneous entry in the AlephBFT config limited the maximum DAG round number to 5000. Under a correct configuration, exceeding this limit causes only a slight slowdown in unit creation. In yesterday’s case, however, the error caused AlephBFT to stop making progress and, ultimately, to stop the finalization. In consequence, block production was also interrupted as — for safety reasons — the configuration doesn’t allow more than 20 non-finalized blocks to be present on-chain. After diagnosing the issue, the team built a hotfix, which was then reviewed and approved by 13:00 CET. After 16:00 CET, the fix was deployed to all Testnet Foundation validators, which consequently started finalizing the problematic session. Once that was concluded, the finalization returned to normal. Today at 14:02 CET, the team has also finalized deploying the hotfix to the Mainnet to avoid potential issues that were present on the Testnet. We’d like to thank the Aleph Zero validators community for their support and feedback during these last two days! 🦾 Validators — update your nodes! Please update your nodes at your earliest convenience with the mainnet hotfix r-9.1-mainnet. The update procedure is the same as usual: aleph-node-runner users need to stop their docker containers and re-run the run_node.sh script, and users building from the source should switch to the r-9.1-mainnet tag in the aleph-node repository. P.S.: This hotfix is unrelated to the upcoming Mainnet 10.0 smart contracts release.

In the meantime though we've also gone ahead and took the necessary steps to increase the exposure to assets other than USDC (had a fairly broad distribution already) to avoid issues in case of market overreaction/bank run. Our first instinct is always capital preservation at turbulent times.

❇️ Here's how Aleph Zero will use the parachain slot ❇️ Dear all, First, let’s clarify one thing. Aleph Zero does not become a parachain. The slot will be used only for bridging purposes between Polkadot and Aleph Zero ecosystems, creating an intermediary parachain between these two networks. Think of this, effectively, as Aleph Zero launching a third public network. First one is the testnet. Second is the mainnet (where AZERO lives). Third will be parachain. Why AZERO isn't becoming a parachain then? All parachains use BABE and GRANDPA consensus while Aleph Zero has its own AlephBFT–this is the technical difference that makes it impossible to make Aleph Zero a parachain per se–it’s non-compatible. It’s like connecting USB-C to USB-A. We’ll build a parachain bridge that will connect $AZERO to $DOT. That will involve a new Aleph Zero "zParachain" that will operate with GRANDPA consensus and connects to Polkadot via XCM. The transactions sent over that bridge will be finalized on both Polkadot and Aleph Zero. There are multiple ecosystem benefits of connecting Aleph Zero to Polkadot: 👉 DOT users could easily exchange their coins and tokens for wrapped assets; 👉 DOT users will get access to dApps built on AZERO; 👉 DOT users will get to use Liminal for privacy. What’s even more interesting is that AZERO users will benefit from each cross-chain connection of Polkadot. This means that—indirectly—ETH and BTC users will be able to bridge to AZERO through the available DOT bridges. Squids can be hosted for free using Subsquid’s hosted service, the Aquarium, and receive data from what will soon be a decentralized network of Archives. ❇️ Automatic reward distribution is now live ❇️ Dear all, We’re glad to report that a frequently requested feature is live: automatic payouts for validators and nominators! This automated service triggers payouts on all of the validators (both Community and Foundation) shortly after the end of each era. What it means is that: - neither nominators nor validators need to trigger the payouts themselves; - nomination pool users still need to claim their rewards but will not be blocked by waiting for their validator to make the payout.
